I've no problem with supporting transparency in a game of chance. I actually live a few miles from a lottery Powerball winner. She doesn't flaunt her wealth or come off as entitled. Her husband though cost her much as the state came back and said... hey that hubby of yours owes back child support. And guess what?? It's being increased from 800$ to 3k,because he can now afford it. Gotta love how the ex-wife now gets more spending money.
My kin are already well off...except my sister. I'd help her and the kids out in a heart beat....
My theory is simple if you didn't keep.in touch when I was in poverty ...then stay away when I gain. So far it's worked
Money does ease one to have less worries on food, clothing, shelter. I've never understood why they don't outright buy the home. Save taxes ,just pay it free and clear.
You mean you don't understand why they don't buy their house, but continue to keep a mortgage on it?
There can be good reasons for that. You can get a very low rate on a mortgage, and if it's a large sum, if you put it in certain investments you can get a better return than what your mortgage costs you in interest. Also, there are tax deductions to be taken into consideration.
Some lotteries don’t give you a choice. Once you claim your prize they’re obligated to release your name as the winner and thus your friends and relatives will know.
It is possible to keep them in the dark if the lottery isn’t required to publicly release your name. That would require good self control. As an example if my wife and I won we’d buy a modest 3 bedroom/2 bath home and tell relatives we used a VA home loan plus our savings to make the purchase. Wife and I don’t have expensive taste in vehicles so our vehicle choices would be in the entry range like Hyundai, Toyota, etc. I’d keep working to continue to use the health insurance for her many medical problems. Once we meet the out of pocket maximum then the insurance covers the rest. If we need to see an out of state specialist our family will just assume it’s covered by our insurance.

The only problem with this plan is that lying is bad. Lying always has a bad outcome. You don't have to share private matters but a tangle of lies is never good.
I know some people will condemn it as selfish but honestly, if I won (in this scenario €10 million), I wouldn't tell family. I don't have many friends and my family sucks to be honest so I'm not sure if they deserve the news. I might still help them but I would not flash my cash or make excess purchases that would arouse any suspicion. As well as that, I don't want to be robbed or have myself held hostage by anyone who finds out.
Being me, I'd probably get plastic surgery (change my eye color from brown eyes to blue, lighten skin, get a hair transplant etc...) After that I would buy a small apartment in an upper-middle class area nearby me and just buy some legal recreational drugs while at the same time, enroll in a small college to get a job in IT.
My goals as to what I would do with the money are somewhat different , but I am not sure I would tell anyone, either, at least not for a while.
