Compulsive behavior crops up in many disorders, and isn't necessarily specific to mood disorders. Disorders that relate to skin picking and related obsessive-compulsive behaviors can also occur comorbidly with bipolar I and bipolar II. Most behavior or this kind is rooted in self-soothing.

This DH says he used to bite his nails continuously, when he was younger. Come to find out, he is also on the autism spectrum. So perhaps it was a stimming behavior.

I never saw a man with Bi-polar bite their nails.

Why can't people that bite their nail chew gum instead?

A replacement habit is more effective, such a using a spinner, fidgeting with something, sewing, drawing, just as long as you use your hands. Eventually some can train themselves out of the habit.

I don’t really think there’s a connection to being bipolar. Many many people bite their nails. It is simply a nervous habit. I don’t know why the thread singles out women either men do this as well.
