Are you sure this is not talking about a liberal SJW mother-in-law?

I've been asking this question for the past 18 or so years. We live near a large lake. To get to our house one drives the roads people take to the 2 main lake access points. Weeds and grass typically cover up the litter in the summer, but in the winter it's really disgusting as it's much more visible.

It's really a pretty place to live and play compared to our previous suburban location. I rarely saw litter there so I just don't understand why people would dump trash on the roads in this beautiful place.

When I bank fish the local lake, I'll often pick up trash to kill time in between bites. I don't think I've ever cleaned up a site that didn't have a good number of beer cans. Based on this, I'd say intoxicated people are more likely to litter. Another thing I've found is if you clean up an area, the people who use it the next time are less likely to trash it.

The target shooters are also the same intoxicated ones judging by the alcohol containers from beer to whiskey.

Carl Hiaasen speculated in one of his books that littering is compulsive. You’re trucking down the road eating a cheeseburger and fries but when you’re done you’ve got nowhere to put the greasy packaging. So out the window it goes.

Obviously littering in general is bad. And people who do it should stop and take a good hard look at their behavior. It’s not very enlightening to say that Joe’s a slob. The question is why? I think it’s paradoxical but probably true: Some people litter the landscape to remove the detritus from their immediate surroundings. In a sense, they are neat freaks.

Then there's throwing beer cans out the car window because you don't want them on the floorboard in case the law stops you. I was guilty of that many a time in my younger days, but that's a different story.

I was blindsided by the amount of trash dumpers in rural Washington, mattresses, toys, toilets, all kinds of crap in people’s front yards. It’s such a nasty, filthy and disgusting thing to do. It looks so low class, not to mention the kind of vermin it attracts. I was showing pictures of my trashy neighbors to my dentist and he said he had the same problem with his neighbors. This whole area must be filled with hillbilly weed/meth heads. I feel like telling them to get off their lazy a*s and clean up their filthy yards.

Absolutely.

I found that Google Earth is invaluable when trying to figure out if a new town is right for you. You can zoom in and see if people are keeping most of their personal belongings in the front yard.

To me, this is a bit different from littering but I confess I have no idea why people do it. Clearly it is hoarding and that's often associated with OCD. But putting it in the front yard...that stumps me.

I did use Google Earth on this area and the 80 ft fir trees hid the mess. Next time, I’m walking and checking it out personally.

Thanks for your support, figured if I wrote this, locals would ride me out of town on a rail, but then again, how can you defend these trash dumping slobs. It’s one of the worst things your neighbors could do, both for appearance and health. Rats probably come in from all over.

Dumps are free on the Big Island of Hawaii, but some people prefer to toss their garbage onto empty lots. Also mattresses, couches, and dead animals.

Old cars are abandoned--I've often wondered if they remove all the VIN tags or if law enforcement doesn't prosecute. I suspect the latter. There are companies that will pay for and pick up junk cars, why not make money?
