Hello, I hope I am in the right place. I been going on to Marijuana anonymous chatrooms, AA, NA chatrooms since 2009. I also attended in person meetings. The thing is I feel that I am addicted to these chatrooms. I do help people by sharing my strength, experience, and hope, but I sit behind the computer screen way too much. I gone hours a day just talking to people about recovery, and random topics. I hate it because I feel I have to check in every single chance I get. At the same time I dont know if I am still an addict. I drank a few times, just a couple drinks and it did not turn out bad.

My doctor and therapist told me one beer a month is ok. So with two professionals telling me I'm not an addict anymore really makes me question, why am I wasting time in these chatrooms? I would like to take up another hobby and get away from the 12 steps recovery circle, I did manage to quit everything on my own the first 2 years, then I returned to MA and now I just feel like its a waste of time. I think my using was due to fitting in and having friends. Now I am more mature, and realized that smoking everyday is lame. So any advice on quitting a chatrooms, or leaving the 12 step program, or AA, MA, NA in person meetings, would be great. thanks …...

I don't think you can throw habits out the window because they just come back in the front door again. You have to coax them downstairs one step at a time, to the door, then out to the sidewalk slowly...

Without writing a book of a post you or anyone else likely won't read, may I offer one suggestion to start the habit down the first stair step. Try swapping out the chat rooms for going on Youtube and watching topics and videos of interest to you. Or better yet, something you can learn from...

Be it rock climbing, beginner blues guitar lessons, how to build a carpenter bee trap, how to pan fry sea scallops, etc.. etc... Whatever your interest is...

I go to a Celebrate Recovery group which is a Christian-based version of AA. I've met a lot of alcoholics. No one I know tinks they are "cured" of their addiction. Most know if they have one drink or one line or whatever depending on their addiction, that eventually their addiction will take control again. You may have one drink this week and then another drink in a few weeks and eventually maybe you'll have 21 drinks one night and wake up in a ditch somewhere.

If you have someone telling you you're not an addict anymore, my advice would be to find someone who won't feed you tis BS. One of the men in my group has not had a drink in 37 years. He'll tell you he is a recovering alcoholic. Note the tense. Not recovered, but recovering even after 37 years. Good luck to you. My advice? Tread carefully.

Well I been pot free since December 1 2014. in that time I drank no more than 20 times. thing is I got into recovery to stop smoking weed. I did that. I feel like a large part of my life revolves around calling other addicts, being or service, and I dont want that anymore. I dont think I am an addict anymore. But I am so used to going to meetings and going online to these chatrooms, I want more than this for my life.

You might be all right then. I misread why you were in a 12 step. I wish you luck.
