I quaff chilled water by the half gallon to the gallon daily. It's not so much a thirst as a desire for that "taste". Now, sometimes it's because I haven't brushed my teeth after a meal and it is the left over taste, the spices, that are driving me to constantly drink.
But....could it be other things? Like mental programming to not run one's self dehydrated to prevent kidney stones? A total acceptance of living an arid environment, Texas, and keeping hydrated as well as protected from the sun? Decades of working in controlled computer environments? Conditioned response of taking in a massive glass of water to beat allergy sniffles? Drinking a lot to kill the thirst for alcohol?
Equally, I want to be in water, experience that splash into the chill around my body. Small wonder that I am a scuba diver but...... does my water desire come from many years of being a diver? Or is it just a bigger picture that the lifestyle of being a diver, from the start of the dive to the warm shower afterward (or the heck of a celebration meal) that makes me love to head for the drink?
It ties in to one's area and environment. Where I currently am - a severely dry area - people aren't interested in water. Nobody plays in it either. Pretty dismal when you're used to the alternative.

Oh no...sorry about that. Any pools around for you or fake lakes??? Better than nothing.
I’m not a water sign & I looove the water. I need to drink more of it though; I drink A LOT of caffeine.
I’m a fire sign & have always butted heads with Pices, actually but I was born on an island & the majority of my DNA is from the regions in & around the Mediterranean (Greece, Sardinia, Cyprus, etc) with the rest from the Baltic Sea (Russia, Finland) & the Atlantic (Scotland).
So where am I now? Colorado. Landlocked; 7,000 ft above sea level, where the average humidity stays in the 30s-40s (sigh). Still became a strong swimmer, though. I swam competitively for the YMCA, achieved my WSI, taught swim lessons & now have two daughters who teach lessons & work as lifeguards.
I can & have swam in almost every conceivable environment; icy mountain lakes, strong ocean currents, with a Stingray in Mexico & a Water Moccasin wrapped around my leg in the Pecos River (NM). Love the water!

I tend to wonder about the desire to be around water myself. I grew up within walking distance of Lake Michigan and I find that I'm miserable in ares that don't have easy access to the ocean or lakes, rivers, and streams, just looking at the water is uplifting sometimes. Ok, sometimes just the smell of it is enough too.
However I don't like the taste of water (some water is downright nasty tasting, looking at you Indianapolis and FL) so I rarely drink it unless it's bottled and flavored.
