But IME, harder core gamers want to spin and make gaming seem like something else, something more worthy or important. For example, like bringing up that some people make big $ in e-sports. Well, 0.001% of people make $ doing lots of things...so what?
I just don’t see why anybody should have to quantify, qualify or justify how they choose to spend their time , if it’s an activity that gives pleasure and a sense of camaraderie then they are not time wasters but has a value to those individuals. If gamers are being defensive it’s because people make rude assumptions and judgements.

I've made it clear that all I'm asking is why one group seems disproportionately more defensive than others doing the same level of so-called time-wasting.

Not why people get defensive in general.

Because people keep accusing them of wasting their time. Are you absolutely sure this one group is more defensive than other groups?

How could one be absolutely sure of that? I'm relating my experience with my circle of friends, young, old, male, female.

I have not done a peer-reviewed study.

And maybe it's perception bias on your part? Why are you getting so defensive?

Sure.

Gaming directly inspired my lucrative career in software development.

Like another poster stated it may be perception bias based on your OWN experience. Have you asked the people in your own circle why they are so defensive ?

Yes.

The most common answer is their spouse or sig other feels it's major wedge in their relationship. They don't tend to say the same about football-watching or golf, for instance.

Spouses often complain their partner spends too much time on their hobbies. My aunt was jealous of how much time my uncle spent fixing his car. My friend was annoyed her husband played tennis all the time until she decided to become a tennis nut herself.
