Two sayings that have stuck with me :

"Don't sweat the small stuff"

Obviously this applies more to human relationships than it does to business.

"Never take No for a answer"

This came from my business broker who said what is the worst thing they can tell you? "No?"

The hard way becomes the easy way.

God helps those who help themselves.

Neatness counts.

Every country ... is like a business.

Revenue - expenses = net income.

Hope this helps.

Though I absolutely hated the job and hated the company and HATED the district manager, he did have a motto that I paid attention to, and it has eventually become a cornerstone of my life and my interactions on a personal and professional level.

"Seek first to understand." Not sure he actually applied it but I have.

Another motto that I have taken to heart is "If you can choose to be right or choose to be kind, kind is right every time."

You don't have to go to every fight you're invited to.

You don't always need to know how to do something but you do need to know how not to do it.

My mother always used to say,

"Don't talk about religion, politics, or other people's kids."

And not necessarily in that order .

Mine would be " I before E except after C "

But it's a guideline, not a rule.

from age 20 to 22 years, all the older rich guys at the private tennis club I worked out said I'll be rich. I believed them but it hasn't happened. dot-com crash and 2009 happened. Maybe they meant when I am 60+?

Not from anyone around me except for once with my mother, who was urging me to call in sick to my job so I could spend the evening watching TV with her, "If they didn't need you, you'd be gone in ten minutes."

My mom always said, "If you want it done right, do it yourself." I don't necessarily apply this to plumbing issues or haircuts, but it's often true.

"Follow the money." This has helped me understand SO many things and why they are the way they are.

"Fast, good, or cheap. Pick one."

I don't recall if someone specific told me this or if I figured it out by observation on the job, but I approach potential disagreements/things that don't seem right with a question rather than an accusation. It tends to prevent people from getting instantly defensive or angry - because people have a tendency to want to answer questions, and it often causes them to find their own mistake. Also, it helps me save face if it turns out there is an underlying issue I just didn't know about.
