about 50 years ago, a few WWII vets at work were telling war stories. One who I knew pretty well was mostly silent, and then said to me:

Remember, those who talk the most, did the least.

As it turns out, this is true in almost any situation, particularly for men. And we see it on here a lot. All sorts of keyboard kommandos and investment wizards....

Thanks Harold, wherever you are.

I can't remember where I read this but it impacted me.

Most people get half way through life before they figure out it's a do-it-yourself thing.

Helped me stop looking to others for validation of my personal decisions.

back in my business building days, i was taught "the golden rule" those that have the gold, make the rules.

i am past that now and i subscribe to another bit of advice i received, "judge less, condemn less, be more forgiving."

Three pieces of advice that were absolutely true.
1. You can get almost anything you want in life, it just takes a lot longer to get than you want it to. I did get what I wanted in life over the course of about 40 years.
2. When I was failing as a manager I went to a remedial management course and the instructor told me I wasn't suited to be a manager, I should find a technical field where I could excel as an individual contributor. I did and it changed my life. For the last 20 years of my working life I got well paid to do a job I loved and was well appreciated for it.
3. From my godfather when he taught me to play poker at the age of 10 and he started out with a lot more chips than I did. The only game in life that is fair is checkers.

Most lasting bit of advice I have taken to heart is "life isn't fair and it will never be fair".

Seemed harsh when I first heard it, perhaps it is but, it is true.

You will get used to it. Not for everything in life, but for many things.
