I’m 71 but I moved from one house to another when I turned 5 so that is a bookmark in my memory (before and after). I’m surprised at how much I recall from the age of 3 or 4 or before. I remember my 2nd birthday and what I was wearing. Of course no one else remembers it enough to confirm it. I remember seeing dirigibles and a house fire across the alley. When I was in 2nd grade the school burned down so that is another bookmark. I remember teachers’ names until I left grade school. I can’t tell you what I did last week.
My ninety-something father vividly remembers something both terrifying and intriguing that occurred way back in 1933 -- the Graf Zeppelin with its new swastika markings passing lowly and slowly overhead en route to Chicago for the World's Fair. He remembers the engines as stupendously loud (this was before jet engines of course).
He has other vivid memories of the Great Depression -- days of dust from the Prairie blowing eastward, clouds of fine grit everywhere, for example, plus the usual childhood stuff. It's the Depression and later the WWII nuances of his memories that are most interesting.
I remember all kinds of odd things from a very early age up through present day.
I recall my phone number from when I was in elementary school and remember the exact street layout of the various towns I lived in as a kid. I remember teachers' names and books I read. I remember specific events like a particular birthday or outing from years ago.
I have no idea where I got my memory from but I think it is from my mom. She is 76 and remembers things from when she was 3-4 years old. I hope that my memory holds up like hers has!
