I am a 24 yo male living in Australia with my friends in a shared appartment. I want to know about my unusual habit which I have of talking too much, right before I doze off in bed. I am usually a reserved person who talks less, but I don't know why I feel the urge of talking continuously (for hours) when I lay in my bed about any topic. And it could be with any person next to me. My friends have also noticed this and I can't figure out why.
Would be thankful if anyone explain why I have this type of urge, according to the psychology.

It's hard to say without more info. Are you wide awake when this happens? Sometimes as people relax after lying down, they go into a mild altered state of consciousness, and start talking about personal matters they otherwise wouldn't talk about. Massage therapists and some acupuncturists notice this; it's actually fairly common. So I'm wondering if it's something like that. You're beginning to relax, getting ready for sleep, so your mind relaxes as well.

Maybe it also means, that since you're normally very reserved, you suppress a lot, so that when you do have a chance to relax and "let go", all kinds of stuff comes out of your mouth. Your normal defenses are down, so your mind allows suppressed thoughts, emotions, etc. to be expressed.

Maybe it would be helpful to you to read a book before falling asleep?

Kind of seems (to me) that once all external stimuli comes to an end for the day, you feel the need to fill the void. I'm kind of the same way...without light, laying in the quiet, my mind starts racing, and I lay there thinking thinking thinking. Sometimes I need to read for a little bit, or listen to music, or something.

Fear of being alone?

Is this something you have always done, or is this a new symptom?

People who have hypomania, cyclothymia or just bipolar disorder can at times be prone to racing thoughts and that can show up as talking too much. I am not saying you have this disorder, but it often shows up in males in mid 20's. So I would probably mention this to your doctor the next time you see him, or when you are getting your physical.

Books help me so much. I focus on someone else's life/story and let all those thoughts swimming around just fade away.
