A while back, someone I know referred to me as a prism or like a prism. Is that a term sometimes used to describe or label certain people or was it probably just a one-off comment?

I have never heard of that term to describe a person.

Was there offered any explanation/description? Context?

A prism refracts (bends) light into its constituent spectrum of colors. Could you tell if it was meant as a compliment? Maybe you're good at helping other people see the full extent or all the details of a situation?

I would take it as a compliment I think. It seems to imply that there is more to you than first meets the eye, and that you're worth getting to know better.

That's how I'd take it, anyway.

Probably someone who doesn't know the meaning of the word but wanted to sound sophisticated. Unfortunately when one uses words incorrectly because they don't know their meaning, they fail to impress. Or more accurately, one impresses others with pretentiousness and ignorance which is not what was hoped for.

Even with common words, they can have different meanings and impressions by us. So this less common word will really be getting into the grey. Hard to say with a prism. They're special, but they change the light into colored components (applied to a person that could be good or bad). So they also alter the light coming in. Nothing off about that in nature, but applied to a person... seems a bit tainted. I've experienced situations where someone said something in a positive and innocent delivery, but the words didn't match that.

But we know nothing of the person who used the word. Maybe they know nothing about prisms, and just pulled it out of the air.

I would have simply asked the person to elaborate, and left out all this guessing.

relecting rays of light. I would take being called a prism a wonderful compliment.

It sounds like it was positive. This has to be one of the most unique compliments I've ever heard.
