Depressing, but mostly true.

We Just Saw How Minds Aren’t Changed
Our current model of social change isn’t working

It turns out that if you tell someone their facts are wrong, you don’t usually win them over; you just entrench false belief.

Yes, there is a Reddit subforum/support group for people who have lost l/are losing family members, parents, spouses to QAnon conspiracy theory, and that is discussed a lot. There are several guidelines there for trying to get their loved ones back mostly based on deprogramming tactics written by experts in getting people out of cults. I don’t remember the details. Most of the people don’t succeed though and the relationships with their loved ones stay contentious until they end completely.

It’s easier said than done though. I still argue with my fiancé over his opinions on some things at times, even though I know it only makes him defensive and entrenches him further. It’s hard not to just argue.

We should acknowledge that changing one's mind is a function of brain plasticity not evidence. Some people have more plasticity than normal at all ages, and everyone has more plasticity when young. It's very hard to break up crystallized knowledge, especially when such knowledge is seen as part of the self and a differentiator.

I bend over backwards in attempts to be intellectually honest. I work hard to see all sides of a given argument.

The key word being work. I think some people get a bit lazy and don't make efforts to occasionally reexamine their own views and reassess things when new data is available.

People become attached to their biases and perceived importance of their own views.

I have no such attachment.

Provide me a new valid sounding arguement and I'll reevaluate my views.
