My method isn't perfect. The sweeping things under the rug approach, denying that they exist, can cause eventual problems. Even if we want to say that my fantasies, my magic is real, even that has its limit.
That is, for example, as a Unicorn, I am a creature of the Earth, created with the Solar System and hence, all the power I need can be drawn from the Sun. It goes both ways. One might say the Sun is endless but consider that a creature that has the ability to directly draw energy from the sun must have enormous energy requirements in its complexity.
Which is all to say, if you are using fantasy to handle stress, you can't say in one approach that it is all magic but then in another, "I now alter the arrangement," for a better suiting.
Yesterday really caught up with me. I am like most people in that I do feel the stress of the pandemic, the horrors of the world, too. I just usually can find ways, if fantasy, to put them out of mind. Useful, especially since I can't drink anymore.
Well, last night about 9, I was hit with a massive imbalance of my methods, one that took several hours of meditation to put them all at peace.
We can detach ourselves from feeling human, we can sweep it under the rug, but eventually, it does catch up with us.
TS, I don’t think it is healthy to “sweep things under the rug.” But we do have in our power the ability to control how much, and what, we bring into our lives. And we choose, even if unconsciously, how we process what we allow in our lives,
In your case, you use meditation, which I regard as a healthy practice. But I don’t think using fantasy to process stress is healthy. Eventually the fantasist is going to be brought up short by a huge dose of undeniable reality.
I do respect others’ methods of controlling stress. We all have our methods. But I have to wonder about the use of fantasy. Or is your “fantasy” really metaphor?

My entire concept of life is metaphoric. Such as turning 60, now a Type II and dealing with that. To me, I have lost my membership card to Mt. Olympus, I am no longer a Goddess (more on that in a moment). It draws inspiration from the Saturday TV show SHAZAM with "Mentor" (Les Treymane). While it is never totally explained what he is, it is speculated that he was a former holder of the powers.
"It pleases me to be Godlike.". I get off on it. It is another way I have to control stress. In reality, that is being angelic, being a woodlands "witch", being helpful, outgoing to human and beast alike. In fantasy.....I'm Glinda.
Got to run. I have a Shaman, errr, doctor's appointment.
Do you struggle to maintain your peace and mind and joy of living?
My husband keeps current on current affairs. I like that he does that. Me, I am having difficulty with the news of the day...
How do you deal with it?
Sometimes.
My husband too. He is informed and tells me the important changes.
I don't watch the news anymore. I read some stuff online, articles about current events, politics etc. but not daily. And only a few minutes.
I meditate. Daily. And exercise. Plus hobbies. Take care of my garden. Interact with friends and family. Knit a lot. Read uplifting books, watch comedies, listen to music, take care of my cat, cook/bake for my husband.
I pray before I eat/drink. I send postcards to my relatives and friends all over the world. I don't have any family here, all are in Europe. It's not easy but we got closer since I emigrated. Closer to my parents.
I draw and paint. Make jewelry. And learn a new language. Try to keep a balance, to stay serene. At peace. In equilibrium. As much as possible.
I just try to concentrate on the positive, not on the negative.
