It's really satisfying when you can do an upgrade. I replaced the wiring harness and burners on my stove many years ago. Since parts were no longer available for my model, I had to select compatible parts from other makes. It took 30 seconds on a modem for each image to load. The burners, including an expensive canning burner, are better than what was on there before.
I also upgraded the radio on a 2014 Toyota Tacoma, first to an HD radio, then to an HD radio with navigation. Both were used factory radios I bought on eBay. Without HD radio, I was limited to NPR or a 6-commercial-marathon followed by a Katy Perry song. Oh, the humanity! You need HD radio for classical music where I live. The benefits of built-in navigation are self-explanatory.
I'm wandering around the house today patching nail and push pin holes and touch up painting scuff marks, etc.
Feels pretty good (since I've been meaning to do this forever!!!) and it's noticeable, to me at least.
It's progress. You're accomplishing something you've wanted to do or needed to do and you did it. You 'hit the mark' ....that's why it feels so good.
It’s also instant gratification. You get tired of seeing a door that needs repainting, or a ding in the wall. Instead of nagging your spouse or calling around and not getting any response from local handymen, you grab a paint brush or spackle and boom, it’s done. It looks good, the labor was free and you saved yourself the aggravation of trying to get someone over to do the work. Best of all, the job can be done as soon as you need it. What’s not to like.

I agree. Years ago, I woke up from a nap to find that my hot water heater was leaking. It was the Saturday before Easter. With less than a half-hour before the local hardware store closed, I took the 1994 Ford Escort station wagon I had bought 3 weeks before, and purchased a water heater. I wasn't thinking straight. Since I was not sure of the fitting sizes, I should have bought 2 3/4 fittings and 1 1/2 fitting. Instead I had to run to Lowe's (which we had by then) and get another fitting. I had the job done by 11:00 PM, past my bed time, but I had hot water again. I doubt that I would have been able to get a plumber before Monday.
Doing it yourself is the best feeling in the world!
The most satisfying, enjoyable period of my life was building houses with our own 4 hands. The sense of accomplishment, the "instant gratification" of the progress each day, the pride of building something beautiful and it being one's most valued possession....just incalculable. And I got a kick out of the amazement of the neighbors.
Yes, I was so enthralled with my DIY ex, I failed to notice all his shortcomings for 17 years, lol. It's a very attractive quality in a man. Or woman!
We live in a world that seems out of control. Fixing things is a way to counter that.
As a software developer I get paid pretty good $ to fix things for a living, and they are just inconvenienced electrons, which can't cut, pinch, or bruise you, and for which many of the tools are cheap or free or at least paid for by your clients / employers. Often I even get to build things from scratch.
In recent days I have gone through a code base speeding up a web site that was failing all the Google "web core vitals" that cause you to lose rankings in search engines. Getting those timings down to as little as 5% of their former values? Priceless! I am a master of the universe! Take that, Covid! Take that, climate crisis! Take that, idiocracy!
My husband is amazingly handy.
I find it super sexy and one of the things I love about him.
He is just so competent and patient and happy after he fixes something around the house.
This is coming from someone who has zero skillz.

I'm handier than my wife but only to a point. What my wife appreciates is I know when I'm in over my head or exceeding my patience levels and am not embarrassed to bring someone in to do the work for me. My wife actually finds that attractive, probably because a lot of the men in her past life were too proud for that.
OTOH I wish I had your husband's mad skills. Kudos to him!

But when I see him talking to the actual professionals that we hire to do the complicated jobs it also swoon worthy. I know there is this mutual respect among craftsman and it makes me smile.
I’ll bet your wife feels the same.
There is just something so masculine and alpha about the whole thing.
