I am 20M and over indulged in DIY this whole year. Replaced a windshield cowl, fixed a wobbly toilet paper holder, fixed door cracks, replaced windshield wipers, crafted a dolly for toilet paper storage, etc
Why does DIY feel so satisfying and just so rewarding? It also improves your motor skills and helps you sharpen your planning ability.
Is this hardwired into us men? Historically one could argue so, but IDK I want to see what everyone else says
I'm a DIY all my life, it's been 55 years since I started it.
If you want to get really hooked on it then keep a log of what you fix and an estimate of what it would cost to have a professional do it. Last year I saved the wife and I about $9,500.
They should teach basic home repairs starting at about 7th grade to all students, male and female.
For me, female, I find it satisfying to do what I can, not only because it saves money, but because it's so much faster than finding someone to fix things and wait to be scheduled in. There seems to be a shortage of handymen on my area. Also there should be some tests to pass that qualify someone to do home repairs. As it is anyone can say they can fix things. Doesn't mean they can or that they do a good job. That's why I always look for bonded and insured.
Yeah, it was great to fix my washing machine following instructions in a library book.
Easier now with the interwebs!
Smashing stuff (concrete block dog house) is fun, too.
We even removed our leaky fireplace and used the bricks for a patio.
If fixing things appeals to you, check out different kinds of crafts, where you make new goods from raw materials, or upcycle used stuff.
Some craft types for making items that have both utility and beauty:
Welding
Woodworking
Sewing
