I was in line at the self-checkout waiting to pay for a single carton of ice cream. The guy ahead of me saw my one item and suggested "You can pay for a single item at the Starbucks upfront."
I declined, partly because I don't know if anyone is even working at the coffee stand, and partly because I tend to bristle at the idea of being told what to do. The guy insisted: "No, really, I do it all the time with just one item...blah blah."
It was just one step away from turning into an ugly argument about who-knows-what's-best-for-who. Fortunately, the guy backed off and shut up.
It's no wonder there is so much violence in public on video today. Why do people do this kind of crap? Can't anyone mind their own G.D. business?
The problem isn't that you were being told what to do; the problem is you can't distinguish between a helpful suggestion and an imperative.
If an unsolicited helpful tip is enough to push you to the brink of an ugly argument, you just might be a drama queen.

Re-read my post where it says "The guy insisted..."
THAT is where things went beyond a helpful suggestion and it veered towards an argument over 'who-knows-best'. This is how people end up on a viral video in a public confrontation.

1) The guy offered a suggestion;
2) You declined;
3) He offered more context to his suggestion;
4) You declined again;
5) He relented.
That could have and should have been the end of it, but for:
6) You came to C-D to rant about "being told what to do."
That's not on him, that's on you.
Now, you can either take a benign suggestion for what it was, or you can imagine someone was "telling you what to do" and go all drama-queen on an internet forum about it. I'll grant the choice is entirely yours if you'll grant I'm not obligated to commend your present choice.
If you had followed his dumbass advice, you'd just end up irritating the crap out of someone in the Starbucks line trying to get coffee!
Why patronize a Starbucks with a grocery item? The money should be paid to the grocery store. Does he not know how barcodes work? That guy was an idiot.
Me, if it does happen, which it hasn't for decades, I have two defences. One, I simply increase my aura. It is an ability I have that I can do at will. Two, if they become pushy about self check out, "Oh, please, I don't want to do that. Now, we have a choice here, do I check out with a cashier.....or do I leave all this stuff right here and walk out?".
As it was yesterday, here, they were short on baggers so I went to the end and started bagging my own stuff....in my own bags. I like being Glinda.
