“I believe the single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude. It is more important than my past, my education, my bankroll, my successes or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances, or my position. Attitude keeps me going or cripples my progress. It alone fuels my fire or assaults my hope. When my attitudes are right, there is no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, no challenge too great for me.”
I agree with this. It is also something I learn from my doctoral advisor. He was a little less eloquent and just told me: “Remember, it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you react to what happens to you.”

This is my favorite quote of this thread so far. Not much more to say other than I believe it's true and it can greatly affect you life.
Turn off the news, stop filling your head the worries of the entire world. Decide to be happy, cherish time with friends and family.
That reminds me of another important lesson I've learned, which is that most of what we think/feel is our own choice. Somebody who worries about pointless things all the time is choosing to do so, whether they are aware of it or not.
Sounds trite but it helps me sometimes. Reminds me to not try and control things that can't be controlled:
"It is what it is."
ETA: A close "cousin expression" to the above is:
"You can't change it. That's just the way it is."
