well, i have heard this as:

"boys want girls to stay the same. girls want boys to change."

specifically:

men marry women expecting them to stay the same.
women marry men and expect them to change.

I had a relationship with a guy I nicknamed "Beast."

Sadly he was too damaged by life to be what I needed him to be.

Romantic entertainment sells the fantasy of a woman being enough to "fix" all the issues of a brooding man with a dark side....But real life is more messy and frightening than a romance novel.

Just my 2 cents.
