Have you heard??? Tina Turner died today! EVERYONE with a SM account -- Facebook, Instagram, Twitter -- seems to be announcing it on his or her personal account. Why? Do they think this is breaking news? Do they believe they're the first to know and tell? Do they imagine everyone hasn't seen or heard it elsewhere already? Surely THEY have seen dozens of similar posts themselves.
I've always wondered why seemingly everyone does this every time anything newsworthy happens.

Theories?
Just how many social media platforms are you active on at once? Maybe you should cut back. You're not a tween anymore.
It's a common human phenomenon, which has been happening since long before social media... people just like being the first to "break the news," especially bad news for some reason. Also, it gives them a chance to share THEIR feelings (e.g. if they were a fan of her music/saw her in concert/shared her life experiences/etc).
Literally no one on my social media has made an announcement about Tina Turner's passing — that I've noticed; I don't watch everything they post.
When those I'm connected to post about the death of cultural icons, I assume it's because there's some sort of personal meaning involved and that they're using social media as a way of processing that — and just maybe, they want to initiate a discussion among others who share memories of concerts or to whom certain songs had special meaning.
I really doubt if anyone believes they're the first to "break the news." After all, they heard it somewhere themselves.
Well yesterday and today, my whole FB feed was Tina, yes like they were the first to post the announcement or picture or video. I don't get it. We all know it happened, Never saw her songs or videos posted before she passed, now that's all I see.
Ugh!

Yes. And I will add that I do NOT watch any news, so all my news is from C-D. I will see something that interests me, whatever the category (sports, celebrities, political news, whatever) and then I will search online for more info.
So when I see a celebrity death that I care about, I will post it under the Celebrity forum with a link if no one else has. But the bold in your post is the relevant part.
