Reddit is pretty toxic and its up/down vote system is designed to form cliques and encourage bullying people in to conformity. Some sub reddits involving video games and TV/movie fandoms are ok, the rest is just garbage.

"the rest" is far too broad to be true about reddit.

Unfortunately it is........

The current design is geared towards getting users on the site frequently, which is not good for the user.

Part of Reddit can be toxic. Overall it's no different than most online forum.

And if Reddit is toxic, go to Twitter...

As some others has mentioned, it all depends on what sub you're on really, and things can even vary greatly within the same sub. And some subs don't allow for such miserable experiences as nasty posts will be deleted and offenders banned.

I don't think it is but your experience on Reddit depends entirely on which subs you join.

If a sub is making you feel like crap, don't look at it.

Ironically my local forum on City-Data used to be a really active, useful forum with lots of discussion from wide variety of people. Gradually it got taken over by a bunch of cranks who confrontationally argue about politics, so a lot of people jumped ship to Reddit, which is the friendlier, more vibrant place to ask questions and get good information.

I'm actually considering leaving reddit to come back here. I was here a long time ago and now can't find my username, so I'm having to start over, but I recognize a lot of the names here. I'm in almost exclusively TV subs on reddit and the hate there is astonishing.

There's even something called hatewatching that I just learned about, where people watch a show they can't stand, just so they can go online and ***** about it. That's the very definition of toxicity.

I will say that I'm in my late 50s, and most of the people I interacted with here were my age and older, so I feel like that has a lot to do with it. The younger set tends to be the more negative (not in all cases of course, but there's a lot of them).

Personally, I'm hoping that if the mobile reddit apps have to go away because of the new API charges, that a lot of them will disappear because most aren't on desktops; they're using their phones.

I actually meant to see if there were any people here leaving reddit due to the API thing.
