Just exactly what is it that you have against Rotonda?

As for us, we love Rotonda.

Once again thanks for the advice guys, we seem to have stirred up a bit of a hornets nest. It is good to see that Rotonda people really love it. I'm not sure we fully understand the point Peter is making, is it just the traditional cultural Sarasota against the modern planned Rotonda ? We will take the forum's views into account and contiune our search.

Sarasota has been named the #1 place in the US to buy real estate (Today Show 10/09) , the #1 place to purchase real estate in the western hemisphere (International Property Journal, UK 6/10) , and the #1 place baby boomers are planning to retire.

Why all the #1s? Because Sarasota is a remarkable place that allows for great beaches, arts and culture, tiki bars and 5 star restaurants, state parks, beautiful preserves, museums, community events, equestrian lifestyles, golf communities, trendy chic urban living, and everything in between.

We were also the #2 beach in the country, but I am disputing that finding Check out lovely Siesta Key, live! (http://seesarasotalive.com/siestakey.php - broken link)

It is, in my opinion and many others, the only place to purchase on the SW coast. And in the current market, you can purchase a lovely home in Sarasota, which promises a far better chance at recovery and appreciation based on projections.

***MOD CUT***

As a former LWR resident and current Rotonda resident IMO you can't go wrong with either area. It's just personal choice. You will get more house for your money in Rotonda, however the LWR area is so beautiful. Other than missing my favorite places to eat in LWR I prefer Rotonda now. It's more laid back, people are extremely friendly and it has a small town feel. If someone would open up a Broken Egg, Serving Spoon or First Watch here I'd be in heaven!

Leapin' lizards....does that mean you've added three more dogs to your family, Sunshines? Can I meet Marley and his little sis when I visit next week?

I have decided to ignore people who put down Rotonda. I would never bash where someone lives no matter how much it doesn't fit my lifestyle or preferences.

Default Lakewood Ranch & Palmer Ranch

Both Lakewood Ranch (north Sarasota) and Palmer Ranch (south Sarasota) are planned communities with lots of amenities popular with winter home owners. Prices have come down considerably over the past 2 years and you can find some very nice homes and townhomes for around $200,000 (or less) in both of these communities.

Sarasota has several nice beaches, including Lido and Siesta Keys. It also has a performing arts center, dinner theater, Ringling Art museum, ballet, 3 shopping malls and lots of other activities if you want things to do during your winter visit to FL.

Which option is best for you will depend on how active you want to be while staying in FL.
