IF your in Charlotte County, you can go to the DMV in Punta Gorda. They are really helpful there. Call ahead and ask what you need. But when you get there - you need to check in at the information desk and they will preview that you have all the right things.

With the new homeland security act, you drivers license is an important identification tool. You will need to bring your birth certificate, Social Security Card, and some billing statements from you home as well as your old license.

Even though I'm much closer to the Murdock tax collector's office (DMV), I prefer the Punta Gorda one as well. Always shorter lines and easier parking.

Ditto what BH and HH said. We've done licenses, car, and fishing licenses in the PG office, and it never took more than a couple of minutes. I assumed it would be a couple of hours like everyplace else we've lived, but was pleasantly surprised. Same goes for the tax assessor's office around the corner.

One difference between the two counties is that there is public transportation in Sarasota County. I don't think Charlotte County has any.

There is even daily bus service from North Port into Downtown Sarasota.
