We are purchasing a home in Port Charlotte to move my in-laws to. This will be a place for us to vacation to, and eventually retire to in 20 or so years. They are 67 and 70 years old and have a few medical problems, mainly COPD related to previous smoking.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for a physician. Looking for board certified, residency trained Internal Medicine or good Family Physician. What are the hospitals like there? Do doctors round on their own patients, or do most use Hospitalists to care for their inpatients? How choosy are the doctor with insurance, or do most accept medicare. More importantly, are these doctors accepting new patients? It always seems the best recommended doctors have full practices already.

Thank you

There are two hospitals in Port Charlotte and they are right across the street from each other - Peace River Regional and Fawcett Memorial. You are right, many of the physicians are not taking new patients. Most of the physicians belong to a medical group such as Millennium Physician Group, Premier Medical Group and Gulf Coast Medical Group. I know that my physician is not taking any new Medicare patients or I would recommend him. I wish you luck with finding good care for your parents. My Mom just switched doctors because her doctor prescribed something she was allergic to 2 times and it was right in her charts. The 2nd time the pharmacy caught it.

Honestly, I'm not impressed with either Peace River or Fawcett. Both of my younger children were born in Peace River and my mother in law had Chrons Disease and spent the better part of two years in Peace River. She passed away about two years ago. My father had a heart transplant and started out dealing with both Peace River and Fawcett. This is my opinion but I wasn't impressed with either hospital.

Have you looked into the North Port area? My Dr is Dr Gross in North Port. Hes a family Dr and is fabulous. He is accepting new patients. If you do choose the Port Charlotte area, North Port is very close to Port Charlotte and my Dr is right on the North Port/Port Charlotte line. I much prefer the Sarasota county Hospitals to the Charlotte county hospitals-North Port/Venice and Sarasota Hospitals.
