We had carpenter ants too. They destroyed two of our trees. They were in the house too, but we didn't SEE any damage, although we didn't have an inspection done, just treated once they knew they were there. It worked though, they never came back. They drilled tiny holes in the walls along the baseboards and blew in whatever pesticide they use. The holes are kind of ugly, but what can you do? You have to treat for them. No one probably notices the holes but me.

Just this past week I was helping a friend installing some floor tile. When we pulled off the existing base moulding in a bump-out area (his house is block but any bump-outs are frame) we found big, black carpenter ants . He poured some of the liquid from a Terro ant trap in the little gap between the concrete floor and drywall. Within a minute a half dozen ants were lined up, feeding on the stuff like pigs at a trough. I wouldn't, however, recommend this as a permanent solution!
