Looking to have the garage floor epoxied in the near future. I've researched the procedure and although Lowe's/Home Depot sell DIY kits for this. My research shows that if you don't use a machine with stell ball-bearings to "rough-up" the floor...the epoxy will eventually be pulled up from the chemicals & heat from your tires.

I'm open to others who have either performed this themselves or utilized a professional.

Thanks as always for your time.

Mike,

Did you ever get an estimate and if so, was it much cheaper doing it yourself. Are you happy with the results? I'm assuming you did not etch or rough up the surface?

TIA

I've seen the epoxy get pulled up by tires even when done by a professional installation too. I think checking references is very important in this type of install.

How does that compare against materials only for a DIY from Lowes, H.D., Etc.?

Not sure yet...I'm out of town..but I'll check how much material is needed for my 21 x 21 garage and figure it out and get back. Still waiting on the second estimate..of course we all know how some of the Florida contractors are with punctuality .....

For a floor that has never been painted before the prep is to acid wash to etch the concrete. Older floors with alot of oil stains may need concrete grinding to give the epoxy something to bind too. like the other post state even with perfect prep hot tires can pull the epoxy off the floor and or leave marks.

I did it on my garage floor. The DIY kit includes an etching product. You have to etch the floor first before you apply the epoxy. Also it's very important to let the epoxy set, I let mine set for an entire week before putting anything back in the garage and brining in the car. If you don't let it set properly then your tires can peel up the epoxy. I did it myself, I think the cost was about $120?

Well, like I said, I'm on the road. I went to Lowe's website and looked at their products. It would take a 3 gallon kit to cover my 21 x 21 garage. Cost is $250. What happens if I run out of product (put it on too thick)? I'm not sure if it's worth the $1300 savings?

Would it be the same finish...look just as good?

What kind of warranty would I get from a contractor?
