I want to get a nice bike for biking the nice trails with my children - we went to Louies and also The Bicycle Center on Tamiami Trail - prices are pretty high - bikes are cheap at WalMart but I was told by the bike shops that the WalMart bikes are made cheaper and will fall apart eventually.

Wondering if there is a happy medium place to shop? Good quality but not as expensive.

probably close to 20 year ago I had bought my son a bike at walmart, and from the main gear with the pedals didn't last long it actualy tore popping wheelies . when I was a kid they lasted forever.
I bought a bike at the sports authority 10 yesRS AGO and aside from new tires it lasted till I got rid of it this spring

You could check Acme bike shop in Port Charlotte.

I've bought several things from them and they're pretty knowledgeable and prices are fair.

You're always going to pay a bit more for a decent bike, though.

I have an Electra Townie, and have had it for 12 years with good use during that time. It literally looks and rides like new. They are about $600 new, but if you search CL you can sometimes find them used. bikes n boards in englewood is a dealer.

Coastal Chic - What is CL?
Also - do people ever sell bikes at estate sales?

You'll find bikes pretty routinely at garage sales, but be prepared to bargain hard for a deal on a good one - for some reason, people expect to get near retail for their good used bikes and good used fishing poles.

I bought my bike at Walmart when I first moved to FL. I have had it 9 years and it still works fine and I haven't had to change or replace anything.

This is what I ride. Bought it about seven years ago on a Colorado vacation. Comfortable and cool. My wife has a bike from the same trip and a newer walmart bike. There is a big difference. spend the extra couple hundred and skip the walmart bikes.

I just wanted to add, the big difference between a "nice" bike and one from Walmart, is the material the frame is made of. My adult bike weighs less than half of my 7 year old son's Walmart bike. No wonder he never wants to ride it! I'll be getting a Townie for him too, one day soon.
