Hey everyone! My job and school has brought me to Southwest Florida permanently and my parents are looking to follow me down here so we can be closer. My mother is a Registered Nurse in New York with over 25 years experience. She is looking to transfer down here. I was curious how difficult it is to find work as a RN in SW Fla. She is looking from everywhere from Port Charlotte to Bonita Springs area. Has anyone had any experience doing this? Is this a difficult thing to do?

Thank you for your responses. All appreciated!

Jobs are available, but be aware that the pay is very low compared to most of the rest of the country.

Like Ed pointed out, the pay is most likely going to be lower. One of the main industries for FL is healthcare so your mom should not have a problem finding a job. You didn't indicate if you will be renting or buying, if you have kids, etc. We can probably give you better direction if you give a littel more info on your needs. Here are a few places to check:

It's interesting, I just got a call this afternoon from someone who is trying to do the exact same thing. His wife is a RN and he is moving down from out of state and he was trying to figure out how she gets a job down here while they are transitioning.

One thing I would mention is that if you are getting a mortgage, do not quit your job and come down here and look for another one. I would come down here and interview, secure the job and then transfer. If you show a gap in employment you might not get qualified for a mortgage.

Anyway, good luck with your search

My parents are looking to buy a house here while still maintaining there house and job in New York. Then once they get a job here they'll move down. There by themselves as I live on my own. There not worried about the finances or the low cost in pay. They have expected that. They just want to be close to where I am.

I posted on here to see if there were openings in the area. Thank you so much for all of those links. That is a big help.
Thank you

Healthcare down here has big turnover ratio (as do many professions). There are always openings. Most folks whom you'll work with come from other states as well. It's no big deal. Enjoy not paying state income tax!
