The Whaler 17 Dauntless looks nice. Ready to drop in the water price is $42,262.31.That is a new 2014. A 1 year old used was 5K less.
So I am not sure if I want that or a new Cadillac SRX.

Wednesday I am going to look at the Carolina Skiff models. A local dealer has them up here.

I do like the deck boats also but they are too big and heavy to put in and out very often. Probably too high to put in the garage also. Not very good fishing boats either.
Wow 42k? You can probably get a Carolina Skiff and a Chevy Equinox for that if you want to compromise.

That's expensive for a 17' boat with a name tag. Have you ever looked a Sea Hunt or Sea Pro? Heck a Grady for that price. Just my opinion.

The funny part about your statement is that most when discussing their lack of experience with boats are thinking about getting a larger boat. For those that aren't aware Sea Ray Marks current boat is 42feet LOA.

Everybody has their price/quality/name brand bias. Bayliner owners would say buying Searay is a lot of extra money for a name tag.

My only rule when it comes to purchasing a boat is never ever buy new unless it is a leftover at a very very good price.

$5k difference between a 2013 used and a 2014 new at $42k is no deal. In one month that 2014 boat will also be used and 1 year old.

I like to buy everything from people who need to sell or the bank.

NADA used boat guide shows that the average retail price of $25,560 for a 2013 17 ft Dauntless Boston Whaler that's a $15,000 difference. And that's retail.

Now that is a big difference! 42k for a 17' I would not consider a deal.

Anyone have any recommendations of good sources to find boats for sale? Boat Trader.com is a joke. It's all dealers with "call for price" or if they have a price for a used boat it is higher than a new one.

I went and looked at 2015 Carolina Skiff 178 and 198 DLVs in a snow squall yesterday. They look like a nice model for what I want. I really did not care for the one change on the 15 model 198. They put an anchor locker in the bow and it reduces the size of the deck to less than the 178 and creates an odd shape.

There's always Craig's List or having a broker search for you. The Hull Truth also has a boats-for-sale forum.

I bought my Seaswirl from an individual off above said Dot.Com site. I suggest searching Used boat sites and adding to your favorites the sites that work for you.. Thats what I did.. Being out of state "might" improve your choices / chances because you can shop in both locations ?? That said I towed my 26 foot sailboat to PCF twice and enjoyed neither trip .. It was 1200 miles at 10 MPG so it wasnt cheap ..Would I do it again to save a few thousand $$ Probably but could I save that much? I looked and looked and looked . I bought what I have now for a power boat , for $11K I see it and similar boats often in yards or at dealers or in papers for $15-$20K....( FOR ME thats when cash is King , so you can move quickly not to save me money by supporting others to defraud the system) You can save a few bucks by breaking down the cost of the sale on the receipt. IIRC you only pay taxes on The Boat and the Trailer NOT on the motor or any of the "STUFF" thats been added / radios sterio GPS PFDs extra prop blablabla. IIRC I paid taxes on 6 not 11.. Its how the Law Is Written, if you desire to pay sales tax on the whole purchase thats your choice..
