Yesterday afternoon, we went to where he found it. I found plenty laying on the ground in front of an empty overgown lot. I could not see any hanging from the trees(bushes). The ones there were all different sizes. ranging from the size of a golf ball to a softball (although they are not round)

It is not a root. They were just laying on top of the ground. No seeds inside.

Sorry, I didn't realize I had linked a website that violated the TOS, it just happened to be the first one I found, my bad. It's an air potato, look it up on Google, turns out its an invasive vine that's prevalent in Florida. BTW- not that you would, but don't eat it, it says some varieties can be poisonous.

How the heck did you know that???? Did you have this in your backyard at one time? I almost thought this thing was alien....LOL

Yes, air potato!!!! Horrible, invasive, and just might take over Florida like kudzoo in the Carolinas. Yucky stuff!

Thank you guys for figuring this one out. We all learned something today. I just knew, I had never seen it before my grandson brought them home.

So It is edible.. its a food source of a sort.. but I will keep an eye out for it and give it a little, medicinal lift of Ivy Be Gone if I see it around in any of the vacant lots along my bicycle circuit : )
