Sandy killed alot of NJ/NY real estate windfalls unfortunately! But life goes on and paradise is in our sights!

As I've repeatedly said, in all probability we will be moving down. We'll be full timers but I too don't understand all of the animosity towards "snowbirds". They provide a major influx of money to the areas which in turn supports and helps to maintain the local economies, businesses, etc. Without the snowbirds things would be drastically different except for those who are independently wealthy to start with.

If it's simply that people want to have the entire area to themselves with no, or minimal transient visitors, I suggest a reality injection.

I think full timers just get tired of the heavier traffic and having wait times at the local restaurants without taking into consideration the fact that many of the businesses here probably wouldn't even be in existence if it weren't for the seasonal influx of customers. Snowbird season is the "Black Friday" for businesses here.

I dunno, it seems to me people become more conservative as they age.

The difference in crowds between Snowbird Season and the rest of the year is so drastic that we who are here all year long go into a slight form of shock during Jan, Feb & March. It is not out of orneriness. More a question of being spoiled by the other 8 or nine months of the year. Also as the years increase the Winter crowds increase as SW Florida becomes more popular.

This year, in our area, a good estimate is the daily population for Feb & March easily doubled or maybe even tripled.

The bottom line is we year round residents know the Snowbirds pay their share and contribute a large amount to the local economy. However the changes in traffic and store crowding is extreme to say the least.

We were down there for two weeks at the end of January and drove extensively in the Venice, North Port, Englewood, PC, and PG areas. If you folks think that's traffic, that's hysterical. For that area maybe but heavy traffic? Far from it. I thought everyone had left already!

Now, that said, I suppose compared to the rest of the year, it is... but heavy traffic, it ain't.

I understand what you are saying BC. I felt the same when I arrived here from NJ many years ago. But those same years in sleepy SW Florida have softened my behind the wheel view of traffic.

I was just trying to explain to you why the Snowbird migration is so noticeable to us who live here year round. As well as the fact that we do appreciate the Snowbirds' financial donations.

Oh I grabbed where you were coming from but looking at it from this end with the traffic up here, it just stuck me funny. When I was down there I kept saying to my wife: "THIS is heavy traffic???" Then laughing - but I certainly understand.
