I was gonna ask how serious their bites are, but a quick google search brought me this.....

Quote:
Fortunately, the pygmy's venom almost never proves fatal. But although only one of six types of poisonous snakes found in Florida, it's the most frequent biter.

"Typically fatalities do not occur from bites," said Stetson University biology professor Terry Farrell. "And usually there's no permanent damage."

Dr. Paul Prator treats snake bites as an emergency physician at University Community Hospital in Tampa. A patient receives an initial dose of four to six vials of antivenin, with additional treatments if needed, he said.

Most patients experience pain, redness and swelling where they were bitten. If left untreated, more severe tissue or muscle damage could occur.

"Right when you're bitten, head for the emergency room," Prator said. "Any significant delay could result in complications from the poisoning."

I Guess #1 Question I guess would be , which if any hospitals in CC have the antivenin?
#2. Would it be true that the larger the Victim the better the chance of recovery?

Rattlers as apposed to pygmy's can be very dangerous...................the guy who cuts our HOAs common areas was telling me he nearly stood on an 8-9' one out in Rotonda Heights....his helper who is some old Indian guy told him the strike would have broken his leg....when Kenny replied 'damn that's bad'...the helper told him that would be the least of his worries as -with the size of the head on the critter 'he would be hoping the chopper got him to hospital in time !!!'

Here's a pretty good read on the subject. The most dangerous venomous snake in Florida is the Eastern Diamondback. Coral snakes are much more venomous, but are reclusive and have small mouths with no real fangs - like cobras, they inject venom by biting rather than striking. Nobody dies from a pygmy bite, but an Eastern Diamondback is completely capable of killing you. Even if you recover, being bitten by a big Diamondback causes serious and extensive tissue damage - recovery and rehabilitation is a long, painful process, and is frequently incomplete. Don't ever try to kill a Diamondback with a shovel, or pick it up with a stick; my weapon of choice is a shotgun - a pistol with rat shot is fine for small snakes, but one shot may not kill a big Diamondback, then it's you and your puny rat shot against one seriously pi$$ed off snake. I'm not sure FWC will do anything about a snake; probably better to call the cops.

I do my best to stay away from snakes.. I do my best to cut them a wide berth.. Here in SWF, they were/had been until recently only Black Racers.. ( Very Common back on Grandma's Farm in IL.) and Orange Corn Snakes(?) I have watched fellows handle, move , and on occation kill snakes and I want No Part of it.. Yes a Shotgun sounds like a good weapon of choice.. Gas Operated : ) slug removed : ) I have made numerous friends here, most have lived here, much most and even all their lives. ALL say dangerous snakes are very un-common.. I hope the biggest baddest Snake I ever see or have to deal with in SWF was that 9" Long Pencil Thin Pigmy Rattler...
