Ok. So the trip is booked, and we are bringing one of my kids, a twelve year old. What is there to do? We are going to check out Bush Gardens, going to avoid Disney/universal (long drive). Are there any "can't miss" attractions that we should check out while we are down?

This is a pretty good place with lots to see. Also it you want to try a gator snack, theirs is excellent.
They also have Florida's largest herd of crocodiles.

Go rent jet skis or a boat and go cruising. Venice Beach is very family friendly, and down towards Sharkeys from Venice Beach is a great beach for hunting sharks teeth. Drive south to Fort Myers and go over to Sanibel, great beach and shells.
