Wilma sat on the island churning away for 48 hours ( not 30 minutes ) and she did so, at 150+ mph.. Hardly a leaf was left anywhere..aprox 50% of all utility poles were damaged or down yet IIRC 10 lives lost 5 of those were military personel on search and rescue during the eye. Actually there was very little damage to homes and building. Was there property damage YES but nothing compared to CC. Why? To start with most of our homes are cement block and most of our roofs on Cozumel are flat cement roofs that often serve as 2nd or 3rd story patios. We had a LOT of flooding...... my house had around 14" of water inside, but Zero actual Damage inside. Burglar Bars over all of our windows and doors protected the glass. I had 2 Large Coconut Palms in my front garden area go down. The fellow I taught Scuba for , lost his entire Ocean Front Building..... Foundation and All, but that was very rare. CRAP....... Crap was everywhere if it wasnt secured it was flying and there were a lot of dead street dogs impaled in trees. Just just like here, 5 years after the storm there was little evidence of the storm.
14 inches of water was a very lucky break, especially if your house was in one of the neighborhoods I mentioned in my previous post. I'm very surprised it wasn't even 10 feet! While cement block houses can resist hurricane winds even as fast as 175 miles per hour, absolutely nothing at all stands the slightest chance against a 15+ foot storm surge. I mean, look what Camille's storm surge did to the Richelieu Apartments in Pass Christian, Mississippi! Three buildings, 3 stories each, and even rumored to be designed like an air raid shelter, and yet Camille's 30 foot surge crushed and flattened all 3 buildings, right down to the bare foundations.

Bad things happening is a risk anywhere along the water in FL.

Doesn't give me the warm fuzzies while contemplating purchasing something, but there's risks in anything. Just like eating my in-laws' cooking during holidays.

Cozumel recouped very quickly as these pictures show.. The water clearity at 40 to 100 fsw is FABULOUS! If we had that Visability in Charlotte Harbor NONE of us could afford to live on the water..
