City of Punta Gorda July 22 Weekly Highlights Report

Staff has received a request for special exception approval to construct a channel from the Vivante Lake through the north end of the Vivante development which would connect directly out to Charlotte Harbor, allowing boaters to access the harbor from the lake. Additionally, they are seeking approval to construct 264 private boat slips for Vivante residents. The appropriate public hearings are being scheduled before the Planning Commission and City Council. The dates of those hearings will be announced in the near future. This request will also need approval from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as well as the State for navigation through state waters, and possibly the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and Army Corp of Engineers.

Vivante Lake is located at the end of West Marian Ave. before the entrance to Ponce de Leon Park.

There was a huge push to do this project in the past although I'm not sure what year it was. It may have even been proposed and considered more than once.

Must be a good time to attempt it again. There are several groups trying to get channels cut, including Vivante, the bird section of PGI, a south entrance to South Gulf Cove, and a Myakka entrance to the west end of the O'Hara/Edgewater areas. They all seem like no-brainers for harbor accessibility and property values, but getting this stuff pushed through all the gov't red tape will be an arduous process. But I hope it goes through for the residents living in those areas!

If I remember the story correctly, when Vivanti was originally built, there was a permit for harbor access. Through builder delays the permit expired and due to ever increasing environmental regulations it was never renewed. People purchased these while being built fully expecting harbor access. Maybe one of the realtors here can confirm this. Just what I had heard.
