Thanks everyone! This has been helpful and is appreciated. Here in NJ we have an underground propane tank, it's much cheaper than electric and natural gas is not available. I'll look more into the cost of both, but I will definitely miss my gas cooktop, looking into induction now Sarge!

Once you get used to induction you will love it. You may need to invest in new cookware but we love it.

I wonder why it so expensive down here compared to up north?

We are in the process of building in Punta Gorda and opted to go with Induction. Gas was our first choice but not having natural gas we didn't want to mess around with the underground tank, fills, the high cost of propane in FL, and so on. Like SeaRay said with induction you might have to replace some pots and pans but you get more efficient heat transfer than regular electric or gas, and the quick and granular temperature adjustments similar to gas. Now if you're thinking of powering a whole home generator, pool heater, or something else with it already then it might make sense to tack the range on as well.

Many things are different here vs "up north".

Gas ranges are a luxury here, if you can add it I would do it, great for resale value

Just an FYI, our last propane fill (in NJ) was $1.50 a gallon, can't believe that it's more than double that in Florida!

Limited natural gas aka competition allows prices to be higher.

You will get about 90,000 btu's out of a gallon of propane. SO.....if you buy a vented set, you will get about 1 to 2 hours per gallon.
If you go with vent free (ventless) you will get 3 to 4 hours out of a gallon.

I have been servicing and installing gas fireplaces for over 20 years, and I am never comfortable with vent free propane units. Propane simply doesn't burn as clean as natural gas. However, if you maintain the unit regularly ,( have a pro do it) you should not have a problem.

Should you go with vented ......you really never need to service it, unless it doesn't work.

SORRY.....after re-reading your post.....I thought you were wondering how much gas you would use....not ,how much you would use the fireplace. I'll leave my post in case anyone is interested.
