Hi All!

We'll be building a house in SGC in the next year and are wondering if anyone has run a line and uses propane vs electric for kitchen appliances, fireplace and lanai grills? We currently live in NJ and use propane with tank deliveries twice yearly and would prefer not to have all electric in the new house. Just trying to find out if propane is available there or if there are reasons why it's not preferred? Any and all responses would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! ps before anyone says that we won't use the fireplace, hubby is on blood thinners and LOVES HEAT, 80 degrees indoors would be heavenly for him... Me, not so much lol.

I'll be curious to see responses here. I did NOT see many, if any, houses w propane tanks in SGC when we were browsing. But then again, maybe they're hidden?

Like you, we have gas in Chicagoland and love it, especially for cooking. So we did the next best thing and got an induction cook-top, but it's electric of course.

We have a fireplace too but, it's electric. Our fire table on the lanai is with a propane tank however.

Good luck!

There are a lot of new builds in SGC with propane. Most of my neighbors have it, and I think every new build on our street in the last couple of years has it.

One reason that you may not see a lot of tanks is that the ARC Guidelines require that "Propane tanks must be installed underground unless smaller than a 100# tank (25 gallons) 15" X 50" in size." It also states than any above ground tanks (meaning those under 100# cap) be screened from view by fence, wall, or landscaping.

That said, large (100-200+ lb.) above ground propane tanks is one of the common ARC violations that the SGC HOA appears to pretty much ignore...

My neighbor in SGC has a full size tank (500 gal.. ??) Mainly used to power his whole house generator.

His tank is rented on a auto fill program.

We have a 120gal tank on the side of the house (only used for water heater & spa heater). Propane here is VERY expensive (almost $4/gal), but for small use appliances like a range and/or water heater, you'll only have to fill it on rare occasions.

Electric is so cheap here in Florida.......to me, it is not worth the expense of propane.
I agree that gas cooking is better. But, you get used to electric. ( I have had gas all my life 'til moving here ) It was supplied by the utility company, so I never had to worry about running out. Plus....it was natural gas, which is a lot safer than propane.

I have propane for a gas cooktop. There is a separate electric oven.

You can either buy the propane tank from the company that installs the tank or lease the tank from the company.

Purchasing the tank is very reasonable and the lease is cheap too.

If you lease, then you must purchase the propane from the company which owns the tank.

We have a propane tank at our house. It is used for the gas tankless hot water heater, gas 6 burner JennAir stove, and gas for the grill. We are thinking of switching over our wood burning fireplace to the gas too, but just haven't done it yet. Not sure how much we would actually use it.
