What are the top hospitals in the area; top physicians? Within 1/2 drive or less. Quality of healthcare? Your experiences, good, bad, ugly?

Geeez..I hate to sound negative but I'm just not too fond of the doctors in Charlotte county in general. IMO, the hospitals are even worse.
My GP physician is in North Port, Dr. Gross and he's terrific. I now take my oldest one there since she's now 18 and has outgrown our pediatrician.
I'll have to say Dr. Khaldi, my gyno in PC is pretty good.
Both Fawcett Hospital and Peace River are not too great, IMO. I had two of my kids in Peace River. When ever I have something serious, I go up to Sarasota Memorial. My little one was in the peds unit for a week or so last year and they were excellent.
I'll give you an example of an incident at Peace River. About 15 years ago my father had his defibrillator (machine that shocks your heart) go off. It went off and he was rushed to Peace River. Apparently the thing shocks your heart back into rhythm but after your heart gets going again it has to be turned off/readjusted. Peace River couldn't figure out what to do and actually called on Sarasota Memorial Dr's for instruction.
My dad later sought care up at Sarasota Memorial and eventually had a heart transplant at Tampa General and has been great for the last 13+ years.
Another situation was with my mom's boyfriend at the time. He had liver issues and Peace River had basically given up on him. My mom brought him up to Sarasota for another opinion. He ended up living another three years and was pretty active during that time.
I guess my point is that I just don't feel like the majority of the doctors down this way are as skilled as the Sarasota Dr's. It's probably painting things with a broad brush and I'm sure there are some good Dr's down here but I think they're few and far between.
A really good Dr. in Port Charlotte that comes to mind is Dr. Asperilla. My dad has done several stories on him. He's an infectious disease Dr and is extremely involved in the community. When you ask around everyone has excellent things to say about him.
Since we're on the subject of medical care in the Charlotte county area I wanted to mention Tidewell Hospice. My mother in law just passed away last night and was in Tidewell for the last week or so. They were absolutely fantastic-from the caring staff, to the gorgeous rooms-top notch all the way.
On another note, I'll mention
Find a doctor - Doctor reviews and ratings - Doctor vitals - RateMDs.com I often go here to check up on various Dr's when I get recommendations.

Thank you for that great information; which confirms what I have heard.
So if you have a good doctor, e.g. one of those you mentioned, and you need hospitalization, God forbid, it's a long drive to Sarasota Memorial. An hour on a good day? Will check that website you linked.

Well, Sarasota Memorial has an emergency room in North Port. So, if it's a dire emergency I go there. If I think I can make the drive to Sarasota, I'll do that.
Yes, Sarasota Hospital is about 45 minute drive. My husband actually works there and makes the drive every day.
Dr. Gross is here in North Port. He's about 5 minutes from my house. I can always get in the same day and he's very caring.
I'm fine with the situation since I don't need the ER too often.

Thanks NPhomeonwer. It's tough. What makes it even tougher is that she wasn't your typical "evil mother-in-law". She was an incredible, fantastic, strong woman.
It's even tougher for the kids. My beloved grandmother passed away when I was 13 and I still remember it like it was yesterday. The kids take it real hard.
She had Crohn's Disease and had suffered and had been sick for a long time...I know she was tired of fighting but it's never easy.

So sorry to hear that your family has lost their beloved grammy. Surely she left wonderful loving memories for you all to cherish. It is never easy to lose a loved one, my sympathy to you.

My wife works at Charlotte Regional in PG, and she rarely has anything good to say about it (and she is a VERY optimistic, positive person). She is never one to b*tch and moan about her job, but just says that the hospital itself is very mismanaged (compared to other places she has worked), has very high employee turnover, and the care of patients by other staff (especially nurses) is very poor. Not a place I would want to be....

I also use a general practioner physician in North Port and like him very much, Dr. Eric Reintsema. As far as the hospitals in this area, knock on wood, I have never had to use one. My boyfriend had his appendix removed at Fawcett Memorial in Port Charlotte and liked it there and had good care. My Mom also had surgery at Fawcett Memorial and had no complaints. I guess it just depends on what you are having done. My grandson has seizures and also went to Fawcett several times.

Thank you Tam; I'll do some research on docs in that area. It is good to know their educational background and whether they graduated #10 in their med school class or #199 out of a class of 200.
The reports on local small hospitals in that area are not good overall. The closer a town is to an excellent facility like Sarasota Memorial, the more talented physicians will be found there.
