Well as you know "Rockfish" (stripers) are a fantastic eating fish, and a lot of fun to catch. I've caught them over 44" although I haven't caught some of the bigger ones. It took me a while to learn how to fish 'em. I went out with some "boys" from the Eastern Shore and they showed me how its done. People that don't have the skill-sets to fish them, don't have much luck, not like those that really know how. Once I learned I filled my freeze with keepers in no time! The taught me all about planer boards, and how to rig them, line length, order, bait, the works - there is a lot to it, and it looks easy when you go with guys that know. I've fished all over the bay, and off-shore - Delaware for the most part.

It is different fishing down here, different equipment, and you don't troll with planer boards. Here the variety of big fish are much more plentiful. Just off my dock I've caught rays, salt water catfish, snapper, and a few sheep head, other pan-type fish. Out in the harbor I've caught snapper (bigger) (both red and yellow tail), sheephead, Spanish Mackrel, and a few nice grouper (some small ones too). Yesterday a school of dolphin (not bottlenose dolphin) ran my canal and the water was boiling! I could see them everywhere, and this morning I saw a few swim by (although I haven't caught any of those yet. This Saturday (weather permitting) FLBob and I are going to go out and try to hit some Tarpon down by Boca Grande Pass.

I haven't done near as much fishing as I want, although I've done 300% more than I have in the past couple years. In our canal every night I see snook that are anywhere from 3.5 - 4 feet in length. They swim in the light that a neighbor has across the canal from me. You're not allowed to fish in those lights - and I haven't - although I've been mighty tempted. I also haven't seen or caught any red fish or trout, or permit, King Mackrel, or hog fish, or a number of other great species. But I know I will soon. I'll keep you posted.

There are a lot of areas to fish for bass, there are huge canals (not gulf access) all over as well as lakes and ponds that are chock full of fish. I havent tried to fish them at all, but have talked with a lot of guys at the bait shop and they have had some nice success. As you know, salt water fish fight 10 times harder than any fresh water species. This month I am going to be out on the water a lot!

In Florida though, you want to be out on the water early because of the afternoon storms. I think you can find a place to hide from the storm though and go back out afterward. That is one of the nice things about having a place 5 minutes to open water.

BH, The dolphin you saw are more likely jacks, they run in big schools and the typical large fish is in the 5lb-10lb size although I've caught some over 20lb.

I've never heard of any regulation prohibiting fishing snook around lights, been doing it for years. I spent many a night floating live shrimp on the tide through the edges of the lights when I first moved to Naples. (just reviewed the regulations and didn't see anything about lights).

Be careful with those grouper you catch in the harbor, many are Goliaths and protected. If the tail is rounded, be sure to leave it in the water. There are many goliaths that are over 300lb in the harbor.
