Default For retirement

I guess I should have qualified that question with the addition of viable for retirement...full year residence.

Default Punta Gorda

Hi Pgans,
My husband and I just came back a few weeks ago from Punta Gorda for the same purpose you are looking. It is a beautiful little town that is rebuilding after Hurricane Charlie nearly flattened it in 2004. There are a few areas that you can look into for homes. The Historic area, which has older very nice homes close to downtown. You also have Punta Gorda Isles ( my personal favorite) which is canal living at it's very best. PGI is also very close to the downtown area. Burnt Store Lakes, and Burnt Stores Isles, which is further away from the downtown area. The downtown area is small, but lovely. There is something going on all the time there. SoFlaGal could help you in a huge way if you are interested I'm sure she'll be answering this post to help you with far more information than I can provide.
For my husband and I, we are not sure if we are getting a boat, so it all boils down to whether we get a boat or not. It is very much a boating community and Punta Gorda offers the best of that if that is what you're interested in. I hope I've helped some. Good luck with your search and best of luck to you.
Patty

Punta Gorda is a great place to retire either full time or as a snowbird. It is very much a boater's paradise.

Beaches are at least 40 minutes away, and the closest beaches are Venice beach and Englewood beach.

Nearly all of Charlotte County is in a FEMA flood zone, but Charlotte County and Punta Gorda have done well at implementing and enforcing building codes that midigate building in a flood zone.

Downtown Punta Gorda is growing, and most of the homes have recovered well from hurrican Charlie.

Default thanx

In just 2 posts, I think my questions were answered. Thanx.
It appears that Venice will be better for us in that we are more "Beach Bums" than we are Boaters. But from what I see on the web, PG sure looks pretty. (As does Venice)

Thanks

We moved from the Punta Gorda area to Venice because of the draw of the beach, and the walkable nature of the town. We found that with the long travel time our trips to the beach were few and far between when we live in PG. Now we hit the beach regularly. My boating and fishing time suffers by not being on open water any longer but I've adapted.

Hey There!

I think everyone has answered your questions. Looking at your list of answers you sent over I really think Venice would be the better spot for you. It's much closer to the beaches and like Punta Gorda has stuff going on in the downtown area, which is very walkable and has some neat little shops.

Pagans,
I started looking in PGI and eventually bought here. I gotta say I love it here. There are a lot of things to do and the homes are beautiful and affordable. You really should check it out. Venice is beautiful too though.
I wrote here looking for answers to a thousand questions that I had, I kinda kept a journal of it, and wrote a little summary near the end. It would be a good idea to read through the whole thing, so you can get some incite into buying from a remote location. I have posted this link before, so if you've already read it, then you may be better prepared to begin your search. Anyway. Here is the link.

Good Luck!

Default Great people

I have to say this is one of the best and most informative forums I have ever seen.

Compared to the other research I have been doing on the area, it is a far better place to get personal opinions, along with factual information.

We are sooooo ready to head South. Selling our current home in West Virginia is the only thing holding us up.

Reading this forum daily only confirms our decision to join you guys in Florida.

Thanks to all of you.

You are going to love it here. I researched things for months and months before comming across this site. I looked in the MLSs and Zillow, and Trulia, and looked at all the REO auction sites, and searched all up and down the east and south east cost. When I found this board, I found the most help, and now I'm living in a terrific place that I love. I am really happy to show my thanks by helping others when I can. I hope you read the thread I posted, because it has helps me a ton, and a lot of other people as well.
