In this era of playlist platforms there really is no need for a dj unless the personality has something to offer. Just sitting there going "w**** the Rock of the Valley" is no longer appealing if it ever was. If a dj is playing music not heard as much or new music of a genre then providing information and backselling is appropriate and of interest to the listener. Also, real niche genres like Arabian Gypsy music requires a host to really educate the listener.
A commercial rock station dj can still be successful if they banter and get creative in between songs. Everyone knows the Lynrd Skynrd song, so just ramble whatever comes to mind in between songs. Otherwise there is no point.

I like one of local Sunday night shows here in San Diego on FM 92.5. The DJ connects with the audience and even takes requests old school style radio. Otherwise, during the week the station can be pretty generic.
With computers and AI, it is a diminishing job market. A couple of radio hosts were talking about it yesterday on a program that I listen to. It's a lot cheaper, especially for smaller stations, to just go with canned music.
In the 60's in NYC, we listened to WMCA Good Guys & Cousin Brucie.
Very enjoyable - they would have top 10 lists, contests, interviews.
I grew up in North Jersey, 20 minutes from NYC, so listened to NYC radio. Seems like they were always doing something, according to memory.
I listen to a NJ talk radio, Dennis and Judy do the 10 to 2pm show. They're usually talking about something interesting. I also catch part of the 2pm show, they can have good topics too. I do not care for their weekend day guy, Big Joe Henry, he's known for jokes, they're usually stupid. Some days I think he's giving a new news story that may be interesting... ... turns out it's a stupid joke.
In the St. Louis, MO area, we have KSHE. KSHE is a rock n roll station that's been around 50 years now, and focuses (now) on "the classics". Well, lately, they've done some kind of change-up, and their afternoon drive time DJ is someone new, and I don't care for him, and I gather other people might not either.
KSHE'S demographic is boomers, and my guess more guys than gals. A couple of weeks ago, the new DJ (who has one of those "bro's" type personalities) was going on and on about female celebrities past 50 years of age, who looks good for 50 and who doesn't. He's talking about boobs, and who's had work done, and who has not, etc.
And I'm listening and thinking to myself "Dude, there are still SOME women who listen to this station. A lot of us are older than 50. I'm finding this line of talk a little offensive." And then I changed the station.
I live in the St. Louis area. KSHE isn't the only radio station around. They're not even the only rock n roll station around. They should do better.
