Our dear hen "Wild One" passed this morning. We found her late yesterday afternoon under a tree, badly multilated and canine tracks all around the chicken house. Her mate, "Lucifer" the rooster was nowhere to be seen--just his beautiful feathers scattered everywhere. Then later today when I went into the chicken house, there he was, lying next to his Wild one, himself, badly wounded. It was a heart breaking sight. We'll see if he lives through the night. Didn't know we'd become so attached to a hen & rooster. Our dog, Hobbs, and two cats seem to sense our sadness (none of them are guilty).

Oh so sorry to hear this. It is amazing how attached we can get to our creatures of any kind. Glad to see Hobbs is still doing well. <<hugs>>

There are always hazards involved when animals are kept outside, as anyone who's been owned by rabbits can tell you. I'm sorry to hear this has happened.
Swans and geese, among other avian species, mate for life. Until now I didn't know this about chickens (or maybe it's not always the case.) Their loyalty and devotion are always inspiring. I hope to find out that Lucifer pulls through, has he been seen by a vet?

Thank you for your message. Lucifer still alive this a.m. and walking around just a bit inside the coop. No, hasn't gone to the vet. Even wounded, I wouldn't dare attempt to pick Luce up--I have a large scar on my hand from him and that's how he got his name.

I'm so sorry for your loss. We can become attached to any animal we care for. It's very hard when we lose them.
