My 9 year old Australian stumpy-tailed cattledog gone unexpectedly. She woke me up on Monday at 4 am crying and panicking, all motor control of her hind legs gone. She had been at the vet's last week for xrays as she seemed to be developing some spinal pain. We expected to find minor arthritis. Xrays were mostly normal except for one rib...a 3" section that would be attached to its vertebrae was simply missing. Congenital defect? No prior injuries known. Then this. Took her back to the vet, who did an ultrasound of that area. A suspicious, diffuse clouded area around the "missing" rib. Steroids started in case the paralysis was caused by a herniated disc pressing on the spinal cord. Larger and larger doses of pain control were barely making a dent. Steroids had no effect at all after 24 hours. We said goodbye this morning.
Sweet silly Bug. A gentle natured, non-stoic cattledog who avoided confrontations with everything, even something as benign as dropped socks. I'll miss you terribly.
It is so hard losing a loved one...You sound like a great owner who did all you could to help her. I'm so sorry.
