Mickey was a scruffy Maine Coon tom cat that my little boy and I had found on the beach. He had the use of only one eye because one had been nearly poked out by his former owners. Never was there such a gentle and loving cat as Mickey. When we would come into the house, there he would be running up to us , delighted to be with his people.
When Mickey was about fifteen years old, a newcomer came into the house . Madeleine . She was a beautiful Persian kitten, but was as dense as could be.
One chilly winter afternoon, Madeleine snuck up the attic steps when no one was looking ; she managed to get way into the corner of the eaves, where no one would be able to rescue her. She meowed and meowed, but it was just impossible to reach her.
Mickey who had not been feeling well at all , heard this plea. Slowly he trudged up the steps . It was not easy for him because he was tired and weak. He padded over to the corner of the attic , lifted Madeleine by her nape and carried her down the stairs.
There , he thought. Now, things will be all right .
Tired from all of his work, he curled up on his favorite rug and went to sleep.
He never woke up.

There will never be another cat like Mickey. And I do hope we meet again so I can remind him of this.

That's a beautiful story, NT. What animals are capable of continuously astounds me. IMO, you will meet up with Mickey again. No doubt.

Oh my god, what a lovely and sad story. I have tears in my eyes. Cats are wonderful creatures. I lost my Kitty nearly two years ago. We shared 16 wonderful years. She was my baby. I still remember her almost every night. Now I have two more cats that I picked up from the streets. They are adorable and I love them as family, but they will never replace my Kitty, each of them has a special place within my heart.
