Just yesterday I was thinking how glad I was that the old gal had made it through the harsh winter we've had here.
Went out several hours ago to run a quick errand and on the way back I looked out to the pasture and thought I saw her down in a bad spot. My property has a number of small seeps that eventually make their way down to the big creek. Snow melt and rain this past week meant supersaturated ground and in the low, boggy areas deep mud.
She was laying on her right side half way in the seep and thick mud. I could tell she's been struggling and trying to get up but had only succeeded in getting herself more trapped in the mud.
I came up to the house and called one of the members of the humane society and she and her husband headed over here. I went back down to Nutmeg and brought several of those padded moving blankets to cover her up a little since she was shivering badly. While C and P where on their way here she called around to the vets. Dr. S was at least 90 minutes away so the second choice was someone from the large animal practice. She was able to get her 45 minutes later and collectively we made the decision that the best thing was to euthanize her. She was around 30 years old and I just couldn't keep the weight on her this winter.
Coming just a week after having the make the painful decision to put down my own dog Bay and my foster dog Lacy this was really tough.
I'm going to have to wait a while before taking in any more senior animals because I've lost so many in the past 6 months. I hope we can get Baby adopted soon by someone with other horses so that she doesn't have to be any only horse. I know she will miss her companion Nutmeg. They'd been together for about 5 or 6 years.
Oh I so sorry to hear about all your losses. That is very hard to take in all at once. At least you did what you could for the animals where others could not. And for you I am sending prayers and thought your way.
Oh.....My heart just aches for you! Losing so many, so close together can take its toll on anyone. Nutmeg must have known, her time had come. So hard on those left behind! ((Hugs)) to you for taking in these seniors.
So sorry for your losses. It's always hard to make that deciison but they are at peace now. <<<hugs>>>
