Thanks for all the help, it is coming in handy in planning my visit to the area this coming week. What would a commute from Durham to that area (off 40 near Page rd exit) be like? I think I can handle up to a half hour commute each way, but more than that would definitely be less than desirable.
You could also look in the area in Raleigh on Hwy 70/Glenwood between Brier Creek and Crabtree Valley Mall. This is where I live now and it takes about 20-25 minutes to get to work in the mornings. Usually around 30-35 minutes in the evenings. But I'm more closer to Crabtree than to Brier Creek. If you lived at Brier Creek you could probably do it in 10-15 minutes.
I would also recommend Brier Creek or the Southpoint area.
My commute from Southpoint to Miami Boulevard Exit (IBM) is 10-15 minutes. I think the commute from Brier Creek would be longer, but you could probably take back roads and never be on the major highways (540/40) and do just fine.

Downtown Durham has some nice rehabbed warehouse buildings - spectacular apartments and you'd be within walking distance of restaurants and bars. You'll get less square footage and a higher price; Duke isn't far, but you won't have students as neighbors.
Your other option is the traditional complex. That's the option I went with when I moved to the area last summer. As much as I liked the vibe of downtown Durham, I couldn't justify the price. I have not regretted my decision at all, as getting around the northern end of Durham can be a pain - going just a few miles can eat up your commute time. I'd recommend my complex, The Berkeley at Southpoint, which is near I-40. It's a convenient location not only because shopping and restaurants are nearby, but it's near both I-40 and 54. Chapel Hill is just up the road and it's about a 20 minute drive to downtown Raleigh. Being in the Southpoint area I feel more centrally located - it's easy to get around the Triangle - I can do nights outs in any of the 3 cities without much of a drive.
