What a great idea! Major league baseball with a minor league flare! A new Stadium, more parking, but where...where to build it....what to call the new team. The possibilities are larger than would fit in a Triangle shape idea bowl!
But what the hey, I can think of some:
If Tampa Bay Rays move here we can call them the Triangle Migrating Rays!
If the Florida Marlins moved here we can call them the Triangle Inland Marlins!
If the LA Dodgers moved here we can call them the Triangle Many Manny's!
If the NY Yankees moves here we could call them simply HOME!
If the NY Mets moved here we could call them the Triangle Jet set Met's!
If the Pittsburgh Pirates moved here we could call them the Triangle Scalawags!
So yes the possibilities are limitless! Go Triangle baseball!
Now where to build it....if its near Cary I bet they would Annex it and proclaim....It's mine! It's mine! It's mine!!!!!
I would love to see a MLB team here. Rumor has it there are sites picked out in downtown where a potential stadium could go. Financiing the stadium could be a big problem for a while. Having the Mudcats and the Bulls nearby would definitely make it a tougher case. (they are building the Minor League Baseball museum in Durham).
City-population-wise, Raleigh has a bigger population than current MLB cities St Louis, Tampa, Cincinnatti, and Tampa . The metro area will continue to increase, so who knows? maybe one day.
Just want to echo what others have said; the Durham Bulls are a great entertainment investment, free parking is doable (actually just thought of it, my now totalled Saturn could get free parking at the structure near the stadium; oh well). Plus the tickets are extremely cheap, and food is cheap to boot.
In contrast the canes run about $50 a ticket if i remember right. You can get 2 for 1 tickets a half dozen times throughout the year though (we got these coupons at a bulls game in the fall).
Personally I would much rather go to a Durham Bulls game than a MLB game.
The only potential positive I could see from a MLB franchise landing in Raleigh would be the possibility of getting to see my Red Sox if the franchise was placed in the AL.
Other than that....over priced tickets, over priced food, over priced parking for an expansion team that would never supplant my Red Sox??
No thanks...
More than willing to get my baseball fix at the DBAP for a 1/4(or less) of the expense....
here is a list of all the headquartered big corporation in the triangle; redhat, rbc, progress energy, first citezens, captrust, highwoods, sas, wakemed (its a big company that could have their namne on the stadium); the last two probally won work but cree, and lenovo
