I was flabbergasted by this article in the N&O today:
Quote:
The Orange County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to place a referendum on the November ballot asking voters to approve an additional 0.25-cent sales tax starting as early as April.
OK, I figured - there must be some great need for higher taxes in Orange County, right? Perhaps due to the economy, or some great unmet need. But no:
Quote:
Commissioners are soliciting public opinion before they determine how the new revenue would be used. They tentatively endorsed using some of the money for economic development.
Now I'm not some conservative Tea Party kind of person (I live in Chapel Hill, after all), but I couldn't help but think - Really?? You want to ask for a tax increase, and then figure out what to spend the money on? If Orange County doesn't have an identified need for additional taxes, I don't believe they should be asking for it.

The ironic part is the tax may be used for "economic development". Adding more sales tax will cause less people to shop in Orange County.

I agree, but in an odd way its sorta refreshing that a government is actually securing a source of funding before spending the money ...

Just curious, what do they charge for license plate renewal in North Carolina?

Registration fees + highway taxes vary with the value of the car. Note that there are property taxes (paid separately) on vehicles in addition to registration fees.

Somewhat related - in today's N&O the Wake School Board will discuss a bond referendum for 2011!

I honestly don't know as I get a bill every few months for something different.

My "Vehicle Tax Notice" for one car, a 1998 VW, is $57 and somewhere down the line I'm also paying the same or more to register it in NC.

How can states like FL have NO income tax and LOW vehicle registration (I pay $36/year flat no tax) operate yet NC likes to suck money from the tax payers? My wife and I will pay upwards of $10k in state income tax alone!

It's not like NC schools are "to die for" or anything, "economic development" - our unemployment rate is higher than the average, so where is the $$ going?

Well... yes, but it should be identify need, secure funding, then spend. Right?

A bit OT, but I've always wondered why NC's Highway use tax is based on the value of a car. Don't all cars use the highways equally regardless of value? You'd think it would be a flat fee...
