Driving home I noticed a haze of smoke over most of Cary, from Maynard & Evans to South of US-1. Didn't see anything on the news... was there a fire somewhere?

I was wondering the same thing. It was really concentrated over Fuquay today and you could smell the smoke. At one point there was a lot of fire truck activity so I think there was a fire somewhere.

I saw the same thing this evening on US-64 as I entered into Wake County (coming from Rocky Mount).

I smelled it all the way up in Northeast Raleigh (Wake Crossroads area) and saw the haze today at about 5 today. It seemed like wherever it was coming from...it was big.

another report from Fuquay. . . even went out driving to see where it was coming from, but the more I drove, the more I realized it was everywhere. Seemed equally concentrated north and south of me, but I didn't see any evidence of fire beyond the smoke - no fire truck activity or sirens or flames that I drove by.

My mom in Virginia also noticed smoke today - obviously not the same fire, but then my dh was grilling tonight and noticed that the smoke didn't rise much, but spread out more than usual. Maybe there's just something in the atmosphere keeping the smoke from rising as high as it normally does, so any smoke is just staying closer to the ground where we can see and smell it? Seems odd that there's no report of big fires considering how widespread it seems to have been.

There are brush fires and forest fires every place in the southeast right now. Been really darn dry. If we do not get rain soon get ready to smell a whole lotta of smoke.

Maybe it is just an inversion layer coupled with various brush & other fires...

Glad there isn't a major fire in the area.

Yeh its very dry out and the dry warm winds outside doesn't help. It's interesting how the direction of the winds can really aggravate these fires. Remember those fires at the beach a few years ago? Smoke and ash made it all the way out here.
