2000 sf on two floors, built in 1975, A/C unit is at least 15 (maybe 25) years old, we keep it 77 when we are home, 80 when we are gone. We paid 137 last month. New energy efficient windows last fall probably helped a lot. breaking news, though: We probably need to get a new unit, since right now it is not working at all! Glad we still have a window unit.

$137 1100 sq ft apartment ... I think I need to raise the thermostat to 95°
yikes!! I feel ya!... when I first moved here from Michigan (end of Aug 2007), my Morrisville apartment (850sqft) electric bill was $97.00!! - I wigged out, truly went into a state of panic about my decision to move here, because in ALL my apartment years living in Michigan, summer AND winter, I'd never had an electric bill more than $45.00.
In my panic, I researched and learned that as a Renter, there are few options for keeping utility costs under control. My leasing office told me I could replace the old-style sliding theromostat with a programmable one, but I would have to hire an electrician to do so - their maintenace wouldn't do it. Also, unlike living in Michigan, I had 9ft. ceilings and I asked the leasing office about adding a ceiling fan in my living room (matching my bdrm) and was told "Yes, the Maintenace staff could do that", but I would be charged $100.00.... this really peev'd me because there were exisiting units within the complex that had pre-installed ceiling fans in both the bedrooms and living room.
My observation: Older complexes seem to be sturdier, but energy-efficiency wasn't a primary consideration at the time they were built, one benefit, they might have mature trees for shading. Newer complexes (5-10 yrs old) have an aesthetic appeal, yet energy-efficiency still doesn't seem to be a consideration...
Given the up-front expenses of moving into an apartment; rental truck, time off work, deposit, fees and non-negotiable lease agreement, I wish prior to moving into an apartment complex, there was a way to know utility rates for 1bdrm/2 bdrms - yeah, I know usage vaires by renter(s), but still...
Our bill was $317., $75 higher than the previous month. Granted we did have company in July but sheesh!
