Keep in mind PGN doesn't make that much money off of us. Their net profit margin is something under 5%. That is fairly low. And don't get mad, get even. They just mailed me a $600 dividend check for 3 months of ownership. That is $200/month they are paying me, so my electricity is more than free.
It appears they make plenty Esp from my tiny house and many posters here. "Net profit" is the key phrase. A lot of charge offs and expenses, and dividends are paid before you get to that net line, 5% of billions is not too shabby. I heard on the radio that it is predicted many people will eventually pay more for their monthly power bill than their monthly mortgage! That's when I go solar
To be truthful, I like them as a company, have a lot of respect for them. Their local leadership are fine people, who volunteer in a meaningful way and the company give to local non-profits.
As for your dividends...you have to own a lot of stock to get that much of a dividend
I love the quote included in the Raleigh Lass attachment
Bill Johnson, chairman, president and chief executive (of Progress Energy) said, "Due primarily to the impact of favorable weather, the company is narrowing its 2010 ongoing earnings guidance range to $2.95 to $3.05 per share, which is the higher end of our previously announced guidance."
this hot weather is obviously favourable for his bonus

I am 99.9% sure dividends come out before net profit so no you are wrong. "Charge offs and expenses" are essential to running any business especially a power plant. Coal and uranium isn't free. What you are thinking of I believe is called "retained earnings".
Their dividend payout is $0.62/share and that is what they earned this past quarter (net income).
As for going solar, you can buy solar or you can buy their dividends, you get more bang for your buck with dividends IMO but to each their own. $40k in solar panels wouldn't cover half your monthly electricity bill plus you are forcing Progress to pay out something like $0.30 per kwh of solar generated electricity while they sell it back at $0.11 kwh.
sorry but you are incorrect as Dividends are 'distributions to shareholders' from Net income attributable to shareholders - some preference share dividends are accounted for same as interest, but ordinary share dividends are after Net Income has been determined. You may find the definitions of Net Income and Dividends helpful to understand better

I was actually joking about solar, my house is small, I only have 2 months of hi electric bills, the rest of the year they are low. Plus, my HOA would kick me out if I tried this.

Yes you are right, I meant after but wrote before. Was responding to quoted post who said net is post dividends. That is why I said she was incorrect. That's what happens when you try to write on a phone .

Pretty sure it is against state law to prohibit solar panels now.
AACK! I just looked at my bill and it was $300.15. I don't look at it all the time since we are on the equal payment plan. Wow! We didn't turn the temp down and actually were home less - so less TV, etc. That's unreal! I guess it shows how darn hot it was in July.
well I'm glad we moved here! Memphis seemed terrible but I did have an air conditioner that was working too hard and EVENTUALLY AHS changed it out .... we had bills that were in the $600-$800 bracket - the house was 4600 sq ft built in 1999....
I am so hoping that mine croaks soon so that AHS can pay for it! That is really the only reason we've kept paying it. Our house is 17 yrs old and the bill was $250 this month...last month was $230. 2400 sq ft house...kept 74-75. It seemed in line considering how hot its been.
My July bill was disappointingly high, $275 for a 3500 sq ft house. I expected better for a house cooled by Geothermal and an ASHP.
